Mount Equinox Vermont

Mount Equinox Vermont

Mount Equinox, which towers to the west directly above the charming little village of Manchester, Vermont , is one of the highest mountains in southern Vermont, if not in all of southern New England. Certainly , it is at least the highest mountain accessible by automobile in this region.

There are many legends concerning the name “Equinox”. The one commonly accepted states that a certain Captain Partridge, at the time Director of the mellifluously entitled “ American Literary Scientific and Military Academy,” led a troop of cadets who marched from Norwich, Vermont, to what is now Manchester and ascended the mountain on September 19, 1823, for the purpose of making some barometric observations. Captain Partridge fixed the altitude of the mountain at 3,807 feet above sea level which was surprisingly accurate for the times, the present altitude being 3,848 feet. The story goes that since the ascent of the mountain was made at approximately the time of the autumnal equinox, the mountain was thereafter referred to as “Equinox Mountain”.

Hildane

Hildane

Robert Todd Lincoln built Hildene as a summer home at the turn of the 20th century. He was the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to survive to maturity. Robert first visited Manchester as a young man in the summer of 1864 when he came to the Equinox Hotel with his mother and his brother Tad.

He was so taken by the beauty of Vermont that some forty years later he returned to purchase 500 acres of land to build what he would call his ancestral home. At the time, Robert was president of the Pullman Company, the largest manufacturing corporation in the country.

Manchester Country Club Golf

Manchester Country Club Golf

Manchester Country Club is a private club for those who appreciate the beauty of Vermont, a fair but challenging golf course, a calendar full of both golfing and social events and tennis on our two new clay tennis courts. In the 1960's, increased demand for golf posed a problem for the Manchester area’s innkeepers and residents. The only course that could be played on a daily fee basis was the Equinox Links, which the hotel management would close to public play whenever they booked a large convention. At the same time, individuals acquiring either retirement or vacation homes encountered full memberships at the private clubs.
